Week 9

Dear Parents and Students,
After a two-week absence, it is good to be back at HIS. Huge thanks go to Ms. Eira, who has proven to have been very popular with the class while I was away. We have had a very busy week this week, and we are all getting very excited about our Fancy Dress Day at Halloween, which will take place next Tuesday.
In Maths, we have begun Topic 5. This topic reviews what we have learned about multiplication, with a focus on estimation, breaking apart, and compatible numbers. We will finish this topic next week, with the Topic Test to take place on Thursday.
We read a new story, Tomàs and the Library Lady, in our Literacy Workshop. We then discussed the story in our Reading Circles. This week, we were investigating writer’s craft, and appreciating how words and pictures can combine in books to convey emotions and set an atmosphere. We also began planning for our Narrative Story - our next major writing assignment.
In Science, we have all but completed our unit on Earth Science, and have begun our next unit, which is all about energy. We will bring the Earth Science unit to a close with our field trip to the Taichung Earthquake Museum, which will take place on Wednesday, 8th November, just a few days after mid-semester break. A notice and permission form has been sent home. Please make sure you have received the form, and return it next week.
In Social Studies, we presented a mini-project on Thursday and Friday. I was impressed with the level of enthusiasm that was directed towards our Patriotism posters and presentations. Pictures of the presentations can be seen via the link at the bottom of this post.
As you are all quite aware, our Fancy Dress Day will take place this coming Tuesday, 31st October. The parade will begin at 9:00am, and all parents and family are welcome and encouraged to attend. Each class will give a performance after the parade.
Please also remember that our mid-semester break takes place next weekend. School will be closed from Friday, 3rd until Monday, 6th November. Classes will resume on Tuesday.
