Week 32

Dear Parents and Students,
The main focus of this week has been the Science Fair. Thank you to all parents who were able to come in to visit the fair; your support is always appreciated by students and teachers alike. All of the hard work from the past eight weeks has paid off, as the morning was a great success. A link to photos of the event can be found at the bottom of this post.
In Maths this week, we completed Topic 16, and had a topic test on Thursday. This was followed by a benchmark test Friday. Next week, we will begin Topic 17, in which we will review what we know about surveys and graphs, and then build our skills in plotting ordered pairs.
In our Literacy Workshop, we have continued following Alice's journey through Wonderland, and are due to complete the entire book next week. We have also completed Unit 5 in English grammar. On Friday, we began Unit 6, which is dedicated to pronouns. We will continue with this unit next week.
In addition to the Science Fair, we spent some time this week developing our understanding of the Design Process. We also had some fun on Friday designing and testing our own paper gliders.
In Social Studies,  we are close to completing our studies of the American Midwest, and we will have a simple open-book test early next week. Next Thursday, we will discuss our next Social Studies assignment, which will be a presentation of one of the western regions of the USA.
As you know, next Friday, 4th May, we will be going on our May Field Trip to Green World. Parents should have received a final notice with details of the schedule and what items to bring. Please let me know as soon as possible if you have not received this notice.
I hope you all enjoy the weekend, and I look forward to seeing everyone on Monday!

Week 31

Dear Parents and Students,
The weather has been fairly mild this week, but we have been busy as usual in Grade 4C. Focus has been mainly on the upcoming Science Fair, but we have had plenty to do in all other subjects.
In Maths this week, we have continued our study of measurements in Topic 16.  We began the week with a review of customary units, then continued with metric units of length and capacity, and then on to mass.  We completed the week studying time, and how to calculate elapsed time. Next week will begin with a lesson about temperature, before we review the entire topic ahead of the Topic Test on Thursday.  We will finish the week in Math with a Benchmark Test focussed on past lessons from Topics 13-16. Please note that there is no need to study for the Benchmark Test, as it is designed to gauge how much students have retained from those topics.
Our Literacy Workshop has been almost completely consumed by Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland,  but we have managed to spend some time practicing our skills using quotation marks. While reading Alice, we are pausing after each chapter to discuss the story, reflect on the events that take place, and appreciate Carroll’s storytelling craft and style. We will continue reading the story throughout next week.
In Science, we spent the early part of the week preparing for the Science Fair, and we held  our in-class presentations on Thursday and Friday. The whole Science Fair experience has been a great learning process, and we have all developed a finer appreciation of how to be diligent scientists while following the Scientific method. We are all very excited in anticipation of the  Science Fair on Tuesday. We hope to see as many parents as possible at the event.
In Social Studies,  we have continued with our studies of the American Midwest. We will be completing the unit next week, with a minor test to take place the week after.
Next Friday, 27th April, we will be taking our annual school photographs. Please remember to brush your hair that morning!
Links to photo albums of our in-class Science Fair presentations and our morning of pottery design can be found at the bottom of this post.  I hope you all have a restful weekend, and I will see you all on Monday!

Congratulations to Albert!

Albert is always bright and cheerful at school, and has a good attitude towards his work and the people around him. This week, along with being his usual friendly self, he did a number of selfless things - often unnoticed by most - that made everyone's day just a little better.  Well done, Albert - your efforts are greatly appreciated!

Week 30

Dear Parents and Students,
Welcome back from Spring Break, and thank you to all parents for making the time to come in and see me this week. Communication is a vital key to your children’s education, and it was great to be able to discuss the progress and development of all of the students in 4C.
We started our week with the Easter Egg Hunt on Monday. We had perfect weather for the activity, and it was fun for all involved. A link to pictures of the event can be found at the bottom of this post.
We began Topic 16 in Maths this week, and spent the best part of the week studying customary units of Measurement. We shifted our attention to metric units on Thursday and Friday, and we will continue next week. This topic is a bit longer than most, so the topic test will not take place until the week after next.
In our Literacy Workshop, we have started reading Lewis Carroll’s classic, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. We will continue to read and discuss this story over the next few weeks. Students are welcome to read ahead at home if you would like to, but it is not a requirement.
In our grammar lessons, we focused on the importance of commas, and how a simple comma can drastically change the meaning of a sentence. A humourous example is included in the form of a meme at the bottom of this post.
In Science, we have begun Part 2 of the Skills Handbook in our Science books. This focuses on scientific procedures and the importance of collecting accurate and reliable data. It also discusses technology, and we have had fun speculating on future technology. Next week, we will focus on the upcoming Science Fair. We will hold in-class presentations on Thursday and Friday, and then the Science Fair itself will take place on the following Tuesday, 24th April. Parents and family are welcome to this event.
Thursday’s chapter test in Social Studies suggests that our studies of the American Midwest have been very productive, as everyone achieved very pleasing results. We will continue our exploration of the Midwest next week, focusing on what the region is like today.
I hope you all have a restful weekend, and I will see you all on Monday!
