Week 36

Dear Parents and Students,
I hope everyone enjoyed the mid-semester break, and had a relaxing long weekend. The break, of course, made our working week one day shorter, but we have packed plenty of work into the past four days.
We completed Topic 18 in Maths, and had our test on Tuesday. Topic 18 was largely focused on algebra, and it was very pleasing to see how everybody was able to take the new concepts on board. We are expanding our range of problem-solving skills and learning new ways to express and communicate mathematical problems and functions. We have already begun Topic 19. This is a short topic, and the Topic Test will take place next Friday.
In our Literacy Workshop, we have spent the week writing an essay expressing an opinion. We published our work on Friday, and will begin planning our next assignment – Writing to Persuade – next Monday.  In grammar, we have completed our unit dedicated to pronouns. Next week, we will begin  our final unit, which is all about adverbs. We will also spend some time next week reading a new story: Happy Birthday, Dr. King.
In Science, we have been investigating how plants and animals respond and adapt to their environments. We have learned that physical traits are inherited, as are many behavioural traits. Some behaviours, however, are learned. We spent time discussing how all of these traits, inherited or learned, can help a species survive and reproduce in its natural environment. We also began designing an insect based on what we have learned. We will continue our investigations next week, and begin to look at various ecosystems.
In Social Studies, we have returned our attention to the Regions Project. We have spent most of this week researching, gathering information, and planning our presentation strategies. Next week, we will collate all of our research and develop our first draft. Our goal is to present our projects on Thursday and Friday, June 7th and 8th.
Please note that next Tuesday, we will have our annual Art Exhibition in the library. The exhibition will be open all day, and then artwork will be on display throughout the school for the following week. Parents and family are welcome to visit the exhibition on Tuesday.
I hope you all have a great weekend, and I'll see you all Monday!

Important Dates:

Tue, 29th May:            Art Exhibition – Library.  Parents and family welcome.
Fri, 1st Jun:                  Maths test – Topic 19

Student of the Week, Week 35

Congratulations to Aimee!

Aimee met the challenges of Iowa week with a positive attitude and made a special effort to organise herself to be ready throughout the week. She was early to school each day, allowing herself plenty of time to prepare herself and settle into her daily routine. Well done, Aimee. Keep it up!

Week 35

Dear Parents and Students,
Congratulations to everyone for getting through Iowa week. It can be quite exhausting to complete so many tests within such a short space of time, but everyone has met the challenge and you should all be proud of yourselves. While most of our week has been consumed with the Iowa tests, we did manage to complete some other work, too.
We continued our Maths program as usual this week, although without any assigned homework.  Topic 19 returns our attention to equations and extends our understanding of algebra. We will review the topic on Tuesday, and our Topic Test will take place on Wednesday.
In our Literacy Workshop, we watched a video production of Alice in Wonderland, and discussed the comparisons and contrasts between the show and the classic novel. We also completed our collaborative book review. Artwork to compliment the review will be completed next week. Also next week, we will begin a new writing assignment – Writing an Opinion. We will follow the writing process over four days, with our published version to be completed next Friday.
In Science, we have been categorizing plants and animals, and have been investigating how plants reproduce and make food. Next week, we will focus on adaptations of animals and plants, along with characteristics that are inherited.
We suspended our Social Studies program this week in order to focus on the Iowa tests.  Next week, we will return to preparing and researching for our Region Projects.
Please don’t forget that we have our mid-semester break this weekend, and there will be no school next Monday. Please also note that next Friday, 25th May, the monthly assembly will begin at 1:10 pm for Grades 3-6. As always, parents and family are welcome, so if you plan to join us, don’t forget the earlier start.
I hope you all enjoy the long weekend. See you next Tuesday!

Important Dates:
19th-21st May:            Mid-Semester Break
Wed, 23rd May:                   Math test – Topic 18
Fri, 25th May:            Monthly Assembly 1:10pm start
Tue, 29th May:          Art Exhibition

Week 34

Dear Parents and Students,
We have had a fairly regular week, with the exception being the number of practice Iowa tests we did. As you know the Iowa tests will take place throughout next week. The best way to prepare is to get plenty of rest, and eat healthy meals and snacks. Further details are included in yesterday’s post, along with the schedule of tests. These have also been posted to your Class Dojo accounts.
In Maths this week, we completed Topic 17, and held the topic test on Friday. Next week, we will begin Topic 19, which is a return to equations. We will use what we know about equations to solve algebra problems, and we will also acknowledge that sometimes, we are unable to create an equation and instead must provide an inequality as an answer to a problem. Please note that there will be no homework assigned next week.
In our Literacy Workshop, we have completed Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, and we have begun our collaborative book review. Next week, we will continue with our review, and we will also be watching a production of the story, and comparing and contrasting this with the book. In Grammar, we have continued our study of pronouns, focusing on the difference between subjective and objective pronouns.
In Science, we have begun our final unit for the year – Life Science. We have started with categorizing plants and animals, and will continue next week, although less frequently, to accommodate the Iowa tests.
In Social Studies, we are preparing for our next Social Studies assignment. We will be breaking into groups and focusing on specific regions and topics. Each group will then spend some time planning and preparing next week, before we do more in-depth research the following week.
I hope all mothers enjoy Mothers Day on Sunday, and that you are all treated well by your families.
Have a great weekend, and make sure you get plenty of rest in preparation for Monday!

Important Dates:
Sun, 13th May: Mothers' Day
14th – 18th May: Iowa tests
19th-21st May: Mid-Semester Break
