Dear Parents and Students,
Da jia hao! We have had a most enjoyable Chinese
Week this week, with many activities taking place throughout. A link to a photo
album of the various activities is included at the bottom of this post. In
addition to all the fun we have had, we have managed to maintain our usual busy
schedule.
In
Maths, we have completed Topic 12, with our topic test having taken place on
Tuesday. This topic has proven to be quite challenging as we become accustomed
to decimals and how they relate to fractions. We have just begun Topic 13
which will revise and extend what we have been learning in Topic 12. This week
also included Benchmark and Cumulative tests of the year’s curriculum to date.
Parents, please make sure that you check and sign all tests that are brought
home at your earliest convenience. To give ourselves a break from all the
tests, we enjoyed something a little different on Wednesday– we made our own
Chinese tangram puzzles and challenged ourselves to create a number of
different designs.
In
our Literacy Workshop, we have
continued our That’s Amazing! theme
with Cendrillon. which is a Caribbean
cariation of the classic, Cinderella. Discussions
during Reading Circles continue to
become more and more insightful, and we are making great progress in developing
our comprehension skills. Next week we will read the third story in the series,
Heat Wave! Then, after the long
break, we will try our hand at writing our own tall stories.
In
Science, we have been working with the Skills Handbook within our Science
workbooks. We will continue with the handbook while we discuss and prepare for
the upcoming Science Fair. This weekend may be a good opportunity for families
to discuss possibilities for Science Fair projects. Our next conference will be
held on Tuesday.
In
Social Studies, we have spent some
time investigating ports of the Southeast, and goods trade and transportation
in general. We have also been reading about the Southeast states of today, and
the types of industries that our found there now. This week, we focused on the
Atlantic States. Next week, we will turn our attention to the Gulf Coast states
and inland states of the region.
As
you are aware, next week consists of only two school days before we begin our
break for Chinese New Year. As there will be no weekly post next Tuesday, I
would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a happy Chinese New Year,
and a safe vacation period. School will
resume after the break on Wednesday, 21st February, but we still
have next Monday and Tuesday to go! See
