Week 24

Dear Parents and Students,

I hope you all had a restful and enjoyable Chinese New Year Vacation. We were lucky to have some warmer sunny days, as it seems winter isn’t quite done with us just yet. Although this week was only three days long, we have managed to be very productive.

In Maths, we have continued our study of decimals and how to add, subtract, multiply and divide decimals with whole numbers. We have completed the lessons for this topic, and will use Monday’s lesson to review Topic 13, with the topic test to take place next Tuesday. The following Thursday will mark the beginning of Topic 14, which is dedicated to area and perimeter.

In our Literacy Workshop, we have had quite a bit of fun reading Heat Wave!, and learning about hyperboles. After reading and discussing the hyperboles in the story, we then tried making up some of our hyperboles. We will use these to create our own Tall Stories next week. We also completed our grammar unit dedicated to using adjectives. We will use some of next week to review Unit 4, and then begin Unit 5, which focuses on capitalization and punctuation.

In Science, we have continued with the Skills Handbook and we have spent some time in the Science Lab becoming familiar with some of the tools that scientists use. Following last week’s procedure, we will continue with the handbook while we develop our projects for the Science Fair. Partners have now been set for Science Fair, and we are currently in the process of establishing our testable question. Partners have until Tuesday to develop and submit a testable question that will be suitable and appropriate to investigate for the Science Fair.

In Social Studies, we have all but completed our studies of the American Southeast, and we are currently reviewing what we have learned. Next week’s lessons will be dedicated to further review before our Unit Test takes place on Friday.

As you are aware, next week will be yet another shorter week, as Taiwan will observe the 2/28 Peace Memorial Day, and schools will be closed. I hope everyone enjoys the holiday. We do have two days of school beforehand, though, so I will see you all on Monday!
